Home Refurbishment: Where to Start

If you have a tight budget but you want to freshen up the look of your home, here are some refurbishment ideas. These are not major renovation projects and will not cost a lot of money. Just spend some time deciding what you want so you can live with the new look for a while.

A New Paint Job

The easiest way to change the look and feel of your interior is to repaint it. Even if you choose to add just a border, or focus on alternate walls, you will be surprised by how much better your kitchen, bedroom, or living area looks.

Make sure to choose something neutral enough to go with furnishings and your carpet or flooring. If you do not, it will not be long before you feel the need for more intensive renovations and extensive furniture shopping. At the same time, your change of colour should be new enough that you notice a difference.

If you want the outside to look better, repainting the exterior of your house is the first thing you should consider. Repainting the outside of a home is a big job, but relatively cheap and effective. If this sounds like too large a task, you might want to hire someone who provides this service, such as Anchor Builders based in Cheshire.

Measure the fittings for your light covers. Take these measurements to a hardware store or even a thrift store. This way, you can change the light fittings around your home without doing any rewiring or spending very much money. Changing light covers enables you to stay current with the times and your new ideas about what looks good. Replace bulky, thirty-year-old covers with more compact styles. Choose ones that are easy to keep clean, and even consider installing coloured lights.

If your kitchen cupboards look a bit out of date, do not replace them. Sand and re-stain them, but choose a new colour. You could also paint them white if you prefer, but wood is warm. Also, change over the handles. Count them and make sure you buy some that have the same kinds of fittings so that they cover any marks left by the old ones.
